Laurie Hazzard, a member who recently presented a talk on the role of Canadian nurses during WWI as part of the Society’s Speakers Series

I have, on many occasions over the years, used the archives for various projects I have been working on and am always amazed at the vast number and richness of the resources available to all of us.

So many communities fail to preserve their history. The Bayfield Historical Society has done an amazing job of not only preserving our history, but also making it accessible to all.

As Canadians, I think we’re really just starting to understand the need to preserve our stories. Certainly we’ve been good about recording the “big” events and our role in those events. However, it’s the day-to-day living and working in our communities that has enabled us to continue to co-create a vast, diverse and inviting country. The Bayfield Historical Society is our local curator, chronicling the many stories of people and organizations which, when put together in context, provide us with not only a map of our past but a blueprint for our future.

John Willock, new member

My family’s history in Bayfield dates back to the 1920s, when my relatives built a summer cottage in the village. My family has been part of the community for the last century. Others in my family were members of the Bayfield Historical Society.

I appreciate the Society’s efforts in maintaining archival records and historical items and documenting our past. The work they do is important because Bayfield is a community with a rich history, and we need to do everything possible to preserve it.
